Some automakers are slowing down EV production, saying electric vehicles are too expensive. Auto execs have pointed to high prices as a big reason why demand for electric cars has slumped this year. AdvertisementHere's three reasons why electric cars are getting more affordable. Cheaper battery packsBy far the most expensive part of any EV is the battery, and spiking battery prices have hit automakers hard. "You have to get to a certain scale to really start to make money on electric cars and for the costs to go down," Valdez Streaty said.

For companies, EAI may be a gold mine. But that isn't stopping companies from using EAI to spy on their employees, determine how they feel, and identify who should be hired and who should be fired. HireVue, a Utah recruitment platform, began using EAI facial analysis in 2014 as part of its candidate interview process. EAI companies disagree. And if it can't, then companies using EAI to make decisions about hiring or firing someone could be entirely misguided.

First, the ride-hailing pay calculations used by researchers, drivers, and companies can vary considerably — some don't fully account for the expenses and hours that impact a driver's profits. Second, drivers' pay can fluctuate based on how often they drive, their vehicle's expenses, and how well their customers tip. Aaron Lavender, a 36-year-old full-time Uber and Lyft driver in Colorado, previously told Insider that tips make up 10% to 20% of his income. The switch to electric vehicles is still hampered by the high cost compared to gas cars. The higher upfront costs don't consider several less obvious costs that can hit after buying an EV. AdvertisementAdvertisementThose premiums are driven by higher repair costs. According to Mitchell, a collision repair software company, the average repair cost for a non-Tesla EV is $269 higher than the average for all vehicles. If people interested in used EVs are worried about replacing an expensive battery, the resale value will take a big hit.

An annual study by auto research firm JD Power found that the overall quality of cars declined. Part of the issue stems from automakers' push to put more tech in vehicles, JD Power tells Insider. Smith Collection/Gado/Getty ImagesPart of the desire to redesign door handles is due to the shift to electric vehicles, Hanley said.
